I notice this constantly at school, and also on social media, and also just everywhere. The people who speak the most loudly and the most certainly about things tend to be the people who have thought about it the least. Whereas the people who actually know things - who have read about them, who have studied them - will say things like "it's complicated" and "it depends" and "there's debate about this." Which somehow makes them sound less credible even though they are clearly more credible.

I think part of what happens is that knowing a lot about something means knowing about the things that complicate it. If you have never looked into whether vaccines cause autism, you might be very confident that they do because you read one article that said so. If you have looked into it extensively, you know it does not, but you also know that science is a process and not every study agrees, which makes you more careful with your words. The careful wording gets read as uncertainty, even though it is actually the sign of understanding.

There is also something about how confidence feels. It feels like leadership. It feels like someone who knows what they are doing. So we follow it, even when the content is empty. I have watched people in group projects be completely wrong and completely confident, and everyone including me goes along with it because disagreeing feels awkward and they seem so sure.
