In 1999, a man named McArthur Wheeler robbed two Pittsburgh banks in broad daylight, his face uncovered, apparently convinced that rubbing lemon juice on his skin would make him invisible to security cameras. Lemon juice is used as invisible ink; Wheeler had presumably extrapolated. When police showed him the footage and he saw himself clearly on screen, he was genuinely baffled. He had been confident. He had been spectacularly wrong. And his confidence had come precisely from the gap in his knowledge: he knew enough to have a theory and not enough to notice its flaws.
This story prompted the psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger to run a series of experiments that produced one of the most cited and most misunderstood findings in modern psychology.
What They Actually Found
Dunning and Kruger tested students in three domains, logical reasoning, grammar, and humour, and found a consistent pattern. Those who performed worst consistently overestimated their own performance. Those who performed best slightly underestimated theirs. The finding was not that stupid people are confident; it was that people with limited knowledge in a specific area lack the meta-cognitive tools to assess their own competence accurately. You need to know enough to know what you don't know. Before you get there, the gaps in your knowledge are invisible to you.
The effect has been replicated, qualified, argued over, and somewhat complicated by subsequent research. The original magnitude was probably overstated; the cultural generalisability is contested. But the core finding, that poor performers in a domain systematically overestimate their performance, has held up well enough to be a real phenomenon. It's just not as clean or dramatic as the popular version suggests.
This Is Not a Personality Flaw
The popular version of Dunning-Kruger has become a way to call people you disagree with stupid. This is a misuse of the finding. The effect is not about personality, intelligence, or moral character. It is about a structural feature of how everyone processes uncertainty in unfamiliar domains. You have this bias. I have this bias. The experts have it too, just in different domains.
The expert who knows immunology deeply and has confident opinions about economics is in the same position as the beginner who has read one article about immunology and thinks they understand vaccines. The specific content changes; the mechanism is identical. Expertise in one area does not protect you from overconfidence in adjacent areas where you're actually a beginner. If anything, success in one domain creates a mild generalised sense of being the kind of person who is competent, which can spill over where it shouldn't.
The Practical Upshot
The useful thing about Dunning-Kruger is not the observation that some people are overconfident, that was already known. It's the specific account of why. Overconfidence in a domain tracks with the early stages of knowledge acquisition: you know enough to have opinions, not enough to test them properly. The correction isn't more confidence in experts or less confidence in beginners. It's calibration, the practice of matching your confidence to the actual quality of your evidence, which requires actively asking "what would I need to know to be wrong about this?"
Most people don't ask that question. It's uncomfortable, and it doesn't feel like progress. But the people who ask it consistently are, over time, more right than the people who don't.
The person most dangerous in any given argument is the one who has just enough knowledge to be certain.
