I've been watching this in classrooms for over fifteen years and something has definitely shifted - though I want to be careful about exactly what I claim it is. The students I teach now are not less capable than earlier cohorts. Many of them are faster, better at finding and synthesising information, more comfortable with ambiguity. But there are specific things that are genuinely harder.

Sustained reading of a long, difficult text is the main one. Not the ability to do it - most students can, when pushed - but the tolerance for the discomfort of doing it without relief. The habit of staying with something hard for an extended period without switching away to something easier has weakened. I don't think that's a coincidence when every alternative is a tap away.

What I push back on is the implicit nostalgia. Students before the internet weren't uniformly deep and contemplative. They were distracted by different things, had access to different amounts of information, and had different gaps. The internet has redistributed unevenness in cognitive ability rather than created it.

What I genuinely miss is the space for boredom.
